Working Together to Reduce Restraint and
Eliminate Isolation in WA Schools
Across Washington State, schools, community organizations, OSPI partners, families, and educational consultants have been working with deep commitment to reduce—and ultimately eliminate—the use of restraint and isolation in our schools. Their dedication, advocacy, and innovation have laid a powerful foundation for systems that honor student dignity and prioritize healing-centered, relationship-driven approaches. These collective achievements have inspired a shared vision for something bigger: a statewide community of practice aligned around belonging, safety, and liberation.
Our inaugural Coalition to End Isolation and to Reduce Restraint (CEIRR) Summit brings together educators, district and building leaders, support staff, family members, youth, statewide partners, advocates, and practitioners from across Washington. This gathering is designed as both a learning space and a call to action—rooted in stories, grounded in data, and guided by research and lived experience.
Together, we will:
- Reflect on lessons learned from the field
- Share aspirations, questions, and persistent challenges
- Engage with tools, models, and strategies that support prevention and healing
- Learn from survivors, families, educators, and national experts
- Reimagine how our systems can remove the barriers that disempower and build classrooms where every child feels safe, seen, and supported
Through keynotes, panels, workshops, and community conversations, this summit is an opportunity to deepen our collective practice and strengthen statewide alignment.
Our goal is simple and profound: to co-create schools where restraint and isolation are no longer used.
